2017 axr syrah
The 2017 vintage started with a big winter rain and flooding that made us predict a fairly large berry size. We had very early heat waves already in April with some heat waves of 90/95 that started stressing the vines fairly early in the season and we had ten days of extreme heat with temperatures over 105 degree days in September. All this really kept a balance because it was a good thing that we had winter rain which gave us a lot of vegetative growth that ended up having high water needs but these heat spells in spring and summer maintained the plant in a stress fall environment and that prevented the plant from creating large berries so we had an average berry diameter which gave us nice extraction. The fire happened on October 11, which was a few days after we picked the Songbird Syrah. We define the 2017 vintage an extreme vintage. Big rains, big heat spells and then a fire. As we say, “without a struggle; there is no glory”. In 2017, we had plenty of struggles but the quality of the vintage is stunning. We believe it is one of the greatest vintages we’ve had since 2002.
